NSW: Students still sweltering in demountables

By Graeme Webber

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - School students continue to swelter in demountable classrooms,
but the NSW government says it is on schedule to aircondition the so-called "hot boxes".

The state opposition today said schools were blacking out because wiring had not been
upgraded to handle new air conditioning units.

Education Minister Dr Andrew Refshauge said the government promised to cool all demountables
by 2005 and 88 per cent of them already had airconditioners.

"More than 800 demountable buildings have been airconditioned since June last year," he said.

"When we aircondition schools we also upgrade the electrical systems.

"On very hot days problems can sometimes occur with electrical systems because of the
extra stress on the system."

The government made a $24 million promise at the last election to aircondition all
public schools.

Opposition education spokeswoman Jillian Skinner said the government was failing to
upgrade old wiring systems for the new equipment.

"I've met teachers who tell me the fuses blow when they turn on the kettle because
the power supply is still decades out of date," she said.

"They have to ration the use of computers, airconditioning and even simple appliances
like kettles."

At Ulladulla High School on the south coast, four demountables had been moved in for
the start of the school year but Mrs Skinner said there was only enough power to turn
the lights on in one of them.

Dr Refshauge said $2 million had been spent upgrading school electrical systems over
the past nine months.
