Vic: Australian scientist casts doubts over human clone claim
MELBOURNE, April 8 AAP - An Australian genetics pioneer today cast doubts over reportsan Italian scientist had used a cloned egg to help a woman become pregnant.
Alan Trounson, the director of Melbourne's Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development, said he did not believe Severino Antinori had the ability or the facilities to clone ababy.
"It is unlikely he has the skills," Professor Trounson told Melbourne radio station 3AW.
"So that, I think, makes it very improbable.
"And it's banned in most places, so I'm not sure where he has done this (or) on whatstrange island.
"It's a bit like James Bond stuff, isn't it?"
A woman taking part in Antinori's human cloning program was reportedly now eight weeks'pregnant.
Antinori announced last year that he planned to pursue his efforts to clone a baby, which is illegal in Italy.
He shot to notoriety in 1994 when he succeeded in helping a 63-year-old Italian womanbecome pregnant through fertilisation treatment administered at his specialised clinicin Rome.
