Qld:Fines for not reporting child sexual abuse

BRISBANE, April 19 AAP - Teachers will be fined up to $1,500 if they fail to report
suspected sexual abuse of students by their colleagues under new laws which come into
effect tomorrow.

The law applies to teachers, cleaners, teachers aides as well as senior officers in
Education Queensland and non-state schools who fail to pass the information on to police.

Education Minister Anna Bligh said the the mandatory reporting would ensure the welfare
and safety of children came first.

"This is the first time in Queensland the obligation to report in writing actual or
suspected sexual abuse of students by school employees has been enshrined in legislation,"

Ms Bligh said.

"Any staff member who fails to report any case of actual or suspected abuse will be
in breach of the law and will be liable for a fine of up to $1,500."

Child protection advocate Hetty Johnston of Bravehearts said the penalties should be harsher.
